Yale Young African Scholars 2027: Powerful Free Program

Yale Young African Scholars 2027 is a tuition-free academic and enrichment program for African secondary school students. Yale will offer an Online College Prep Workshop from July 15–20, 2027 and a Residential Leadership Summit in Rwanda from August 7–15, 2027. Students can be admitted to only one of the two programs. Applications for the 2027 cycle are open now.

The program is designed for students who plan to pursue tertiary education and want to create positive impact as young leaders in Africa. There are no tuition costs for either 2027 program. Early Action closes October 20, 2026, while Regular Decision closes January 20, 2027. Yale gives preference to high-achieving, low-income students who have limited university guidance in their schools or communities.

Benefits and Funding

Both YYAS options are offered without tuition charges. Participants receive academic enrichment, university-admissions guidance, financial-aid information and opportunities to develop leadership skills with peers from across Africa.

The residential summit adds an in-person leadership experience in Rwanda, while the online workshop provides a remote college-preparation option. Yale states that the admissions committee especially values high-achieving, low-income applicants who lack university guidance in their communities.
